Reading acquisition buffer when trigger is disabled (SCPI)

Hi,

Is it possible to read from the acquisition buffer when the trigger is disabled?

I have noticed that even when the trigger is disabled, WPOS continues to cycle through the buffer. Are data being written to the buffer or is WPOS simply counting? If data are written, how can I retrieve them? I get ERR!ERR!ERR! when I try. Note, I need only part of the buffer.
