set hwclock to read from RTC connected via i2c?

I have have a RTC module that I use on my Pi3 via i2c. I am able to set the Pi3's hwclock to read from the RTC. I did all of this from the Pi3's LXTerminal application using fairly simple commands and editing the Pi3's kernel to always base its hwclock from the RTC.

Can the same thing be done with the red pitaya? I'm hoping the process is similar to the Pi3. If not, thank you for your time!
