USB tethering?

Post by doronbehar » Wed Mar 15, 2023 7:37 pm

Is it possible to connect a redpitaya to the internet via USB tethering and an Android phone? Without buying a WiFi dongle? I can SSH to it via it's Ethernet connection, and run commands there, but there is no internet connection in this network. I would like to connect it to the internet via my Android phone and USB tethering.

I don't see any USB network devices when I run:

Code: Select all

root@rp-f09b9a:~# ip a
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 ::1/128 scope host
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:26:32:f0:9b:9a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    inet 169.254.155.155/16 brd 169.254.255.255 scope link eth0
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet 10.10.68.30/8 brd 10.255.255.255 scope global eth0
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet 10.10.68.16/26 brd 10.10.68.63 scope global dynamic eth0
       valid_lft 604750sec preferred_lft 604750sec
3: sit0@NONE: <NOARP> mtu 1480 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1
    link/sit 0.0.0.0 brd 0.0.0.0
Whereas here on my laptop, turning on USB tethering with a connected Android phone, automatically and immediately, connects me to the Phone's network.

The USB port on the Red Pitaya is meant to connect and control an external device (for example, a Wi-fi dongle).

We have not explored USB tethering yet, though maybe you could do it with the help of an Ethernet to USB converter and try the connection that way.
Red Pitaya is probably looking for devices connected through the ethernet port. This is most likely the reason why it is not detecting any other devices.

I will consult with my team on this and let you know of any suggestions from their side.
