Continuous Output

Post by jace » Thu Oct 05, 2023 8:27 pm

We are trying to set up continuous output from our Red Pitaya device.
The goal is to have a file which we will convert into a waveform and then stream to the red pitaya which should send that waveform out.

We are starting from the base MATLAB code for the arbitrary signal generator, but we want to be able to continuously send more information. Thus the arbitrary signal being generated should be changing over time.

From the documentation it is not clear on how to achieve this and would appreciate some guidance. Thanks.

Dear jace,

Currently, you can specify a 16384 sample-long arbitrary period, with the use of the SCPI commands, which is then generated as one period of a waveform. You can change the data in the middle of generation and the output period will change.

The problem is that it is not possible to change the data fast and there will always be a delay before the data is changed (assuming burst data sending, which comes the closest to the wanted functionality. At least if data repetitions are unwanted). Also, there is the problem of output frequency recalculation as Red Pitaya assumes that the defined arbitrary period (16384 samples) is just one period (exactly the same as one sine period is to a sine waveform), so the frequency specified with the SCPI commands is set for the whole buffer (one period of the arbitrary waveform) (some recalculations need to be made to ensure the actual output frequency is correct).

As of right now, there is no way to stream data continuously from a file on a computer to the Red Pitaya outputs. We plan to include this in the future, but it is currently not in the development pipeline.

The best way to achieve this would be to create your own application or reprogram the FPGA.
