Error installing Vitis for Pave Demin's SDR dev environment

I'm following installation instructions for installing Red Pitaya dev environment on my PC as per http://pavel-demin.github.io/red-pitaya ... t-machine/. I got the tar file and tried unpacking it on my newly created Virtual Box, but after the long process of untarring it gave me a bunch of error messages "Cannot hard link to..." and "Operation not permitted", after which it said "tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors". Have any of you guys had a similar problem?
