SATA HDD

Post by igttgit » Mon Nov 09, 2015 7:55 pm

In the forum, it has been established that the SATA ports on the RP board are purely there for high speed interconnection.

However from a viewpoint of vast bulk high speed data storage these ports would be ideal.

I have found that there exists an IP module from Design Gateway which allows SSD HDD direct connection through an FPGA directly. Could this IP work with an RP ? Thinking of investing in this IP

As a post scrip: thank you for previous help with FPGA queries, I have built several simple FPGA programs, still developing my knowledge. Currently building a custom laboratory high speed measurement equipment to acquire and process data in real-time(ish)

No.

The Design Gateway product (and any other PCIe or SATA solution for ZYNQs) ultimately relies on GTX/GTP highspeed serial transceivers for their physical links. The 7z010 which is at the heart of the Red Pitaya does not have those.

Gigabit ethernet is the fastest connection available on the Red Pitaya, and nothing short of a major redesign of the hardware can change that.
(Well, you could conceivably use the 16 GPIO lines for data transfer and reach a higher cumulated rate, but signal integrity issues and synchronization would be a real PITA)
