Connecting Red Pitaya to a LAN

Post by chrispwkoe » Wed Aug 17, 2016 12:29 pm

Hello, everyone

I'm having troble connecting the Red Pitaya to my LAN (no WiFi).

The RP gets an IP address, that seems to be correct.
I checked this over USB link/console, using commands "ifconfig" or "ip a".
I use the program Tera Term for the console connection.

Unfortunatly, other members of the Network can not connect to the RP.

Pinging does not work, no matter, if I ping from my PC or from the RP.
I entered the RP's IP in my Browser, but it does not connect.
The discovery service also does not work.

About 1 out of 10 connection attempts is successful.
Once the connection is established, it does not cause any more trouble, until i need
to disconnect or restart the RP.
In this case, the probability for a successful reconnect is relatively high.

But when I try to "coldstart", it happens quite often, that I can not
establish a connection after 10 attempts.

I have tried the OS releases 0.92, 0.95 and 0.96 and use RP hardware V1.1 .
I also have tried, both, DHCP and assigning a static address.
My Host PC runs Windows 10.

I completely ran out of ideas. Is it possible, that my network
is configured wrong? Or do i have a hardware problem?

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Hi,

the default configuration of most home network equipment is usually compatible with the Red Pitaya's needs. When you can't reach the Red Pitaya, you could try to disconnect it and then ping the address from your computer to see if another device answers. If that's the case, most likely there is a static ip address configured somewhere which the dhcp server is unaware of. The resulting conflict might be the cause of your issues.

Another question, is your Red Pitaya's power supply sufficient? Random dropouts can occur when you use a supply with less than 2A current rating.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have now got a second red pitaya (V1.1, like the old one), that I can use for connection attempts.

I have checked all the points You have mentioned with the old RP, but did not find the error.
For powering the RP, I either use an AC adapter that is specified with Output 5V/2A or DC/DC converter
that is specified with Output 5V/3A. I have the same issue with both power supplies.

When I use the new RP with OS 0.96 and DHCP, I receive an address conflict, because the RP's
IP is already in use. Using the old OS (0.92) with a static IP works badly on the new RP, as well.

kind regards

chris

BTW, when I use static IP or DHCP with the old RP, the RP uses an IP address, that was not in use before starting the RP.
But for some reason the RP is "invisible" for other network members.

Ok, now i'musing a workaround for my problem. instead of trying to connect my RP to the LAN,
I connect the RP to the PC directly, using a network card. (Up to) now, my RP can not
connect to the internet, but at least the problem with the unreliable interface is gone.
