Power up Red Pitaya through External Connector

According to this link Power protection is needed in order to power up the RP through pin 1, E2.

However, looking at the RP schematics, page 6, the +5VDin seems to already have power protection frontend.

Am I missing the point here? What's really necessary to just power up the red pitaya through the pin1, E2?

It looks like the only difference is that there is no fuse when you power the RP through the extension connector.
