Linux desktop for red pitaya

I'm trying to develop on the red pitaya similar to how one develops on the raspberry pi. I would like to access the red pitaya Linux desktop on a monitor. Get X information. Use apt to update packages, program things in C or Python, that sort of thing, from a GUI Linux desktop running on the red pitaya's arm processor.

It seems like this is either not possible or easily possible and everyone knows the answer, but I don't seem to be able to find it.

If this is not possible with the red pitaya, why is that?

How do you plan to connect Red Pitaya to a monitor?

If VNC is OK for you, then it is indeed possible to run a desktop environment and access it via VNC. There are many instructions on the web on how to install and configure xfce and tightvnc.

Yes, tightvnc would work. Is there a red pitaya specific page you could point me to? Or a page of instructions you believe would work? I have never done a vnc without first being able to see the desktop first.
