Measuring an OCXO phase noise with Red Pitaya

Post by JorgeST » Mon Dec 25, 2023 3:43 am

Has anyone heard of an approach using the Red Pitaya to measure the phase noise of (for example) a 10MHz oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO)?

If anyone has a hint of a project underway and/or that was executed in the past, please point me in the right direction.

I've been unable to find any material on the subject.

Much appreciated. Happy Holidays

A direct measurement won't work since the RP oscillator is probably much less stable than your OCXO. Generally precision timing measurements will beat pairs of oscillators together using mixers, and measure the relative phase/frequency. An RP can do that.
Ideally you would have a reference oscillator that is better than your OCXO, but if not, you have to settle for comparing similar versions.
