Why is it required to register?
It is outrageously that I must register to get the image for a device which I have bought. This is by lengths worse than Google! I'm very angry. A very bad start.

Exactly my opinion.
However there is a hidden way to do it manually:

I found this before I registered, but did not know that the needed SD card image is also called ecosystem.
It looks pretty much that this hidden way without registration is just there in order to be legally untouchable.
From a lawyer's view you cannot complain, that you must register in order to get going what you already have bought and paid.
Long story short:
Nice hardware and open source approach, but very much undesirable business model and attitude.
