I2C message at console

I get the following message repeatedly output on my RP console:
cdns-i2c e0004000.i2c: timeout waiting on completion
the message slows down when I disable the input probes from the Web GUI. Slows down further (or even stops) when the signal generator (square wave, 500Hz) is stopped.
What is this ?
