Network chipset problem, unable to use 1000 Mbit/s ( 1Gb/s )

Post by F4HTB » Thu Jul 20, 2017 1:17 pm

Hello dear all members of the redpitaya community,

I am Olivier SCHMITT IT support and linux dev for F4KJI project.
http://www.f4kji.fr
We made some websdr with redpitaya and automatic decoding for some
digital and CW communication.

I send this post because we experiency a problem about our redpitaya
network connection.

For a time, the redpitaya has to operate in 1000mbits / s (gigabit).
We have a direct connection and not a switch.

For some reasons, it does not want to pass in 1000mbits / s and stays
in 100mbits / s yet.

I tested several things before send this post.
I try to contact redpitaya support team without responses.

Force the link in giga with ethtool on our server or on the redpitaya.
The connection is not done in 1000 Mbit/s and will revert to 100mbits / s after 2 minutes.

We changed server (we had another in stock).
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

I tried directly on my laptop with which I had previously worked on
redpitaya in gigabit.
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

We obviously change the cables ethernets several times.
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

We tested several other red pitaya power supplies.
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

We tested with and without antennas.
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

We had put the redpitaya over an aluminum block cooler and we tested
without.
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

We tested versions 0.94, 0.95, 0.96 and 0.97.
Nothing changes, it remains in 100mbits / s.

When we connect a switch between the server and the redpitaya, it
switches to Gigabit but the data is chopped and there are errors that
are incremented, we see it with an ifconfig and get Error counter.
Moreover, always on the switch, the redpitaya goes back in 100mbits / s
and in 1000mbits / s randomly.

I have also noticed that when I leave 100mbits / s with ethtool, when I
leave the auto-negotiation on, I sometimes have scraps in the data streams.
With off no problems but always in 100mbits / s

The first few months of testing, we had no problem.

Do you have any ideas?

From my experience and my opinion, I suspect that the network chipset
is failing ....

What to do?

Great thanks in advance.
We would like to use more bands for decoding but for now we are blocked in 100mbits/s and we need 1000mbits/s...

I get a answer from redpitaya team.
I wait for their diagnosis.
They were at the magnificent exhibition of ham radio friedrichshafen.
It is a pleasure to see that the redpitaya project is gaining in scale.

Hi,

thanks for the support regarding our growth.

Regarding the ethernet problem, we kindly ask if you can try to reproduce the problem with another Red Pitaya and see if the problem persists. However this particular Red Pitayas network PHY does look like it is faulty. Please send the Pitaya back and we will ship you a replacement.

kind regards Red Pitaya team
