USB display

Post by makkie2002 » Tue May 05, 2015 10:29 pm

Hello,

I really like the RedPitaya but I kind of miss a display output on the device. Why not use an USB VGA or HDMI adapter to solve this? I know many of these adapters use the Displaylink chipset which should be supported in Linux. Anybody tried something similar? It would be great to have an Ubuntu desktop running on the RedPitaya!

Hi,

There are some instructions on how to connect a USB display to the Raspberry Pi board:

https://www.igorkromin.net/index.php/20 ... spberrypi/
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... hp?t=27781
http://www.plugcomputer.org/plugforum/i ... opic=749.0

Following these instructions, I enabled Linux drivers for Displaylink USB Framebuffer and USB touchscreen:

Device Drivers -> Graphics Support -> Frame buffer Devices -> <*> Displaylink USB Framebuffer support
Device Drivers -> Input device support -> [*] Touchscreens -> <*> USB Touchscreen Driver

and rebuilt the Ubuntu 14.04.2 SD card image for Red Pitaya. Here is the new image:

Unfortunately, I don't have any Displaylink based device to test it.

If somebody is interested, the following Displaylink based graphics cards are available from amazon.de:

http://www.amazon.de/Display-Adapter-19 ... B0033XBK4G
http://www.amazon.de/Display-Adapter-19 ... B0048JWZQG

Alternatively, it's also possible to run VNC server and XFCE desktop environment on Red Pitaya and access it from a VNC client running on a PC or a tablet via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

You can find some more details on how to install VNC server and XFCE desktop environment in the following forum thread:
