Network/ Partition problem

Post by Thorsten » Tue Sep 23, 2014 11:21 am

Hi there,

I have the same problem with the SD card like Hendrik in his "Network problem" thread, viewtopic.php?f=8&t=277
Regarding the "partition issue" I did:

redpitaya> fdisk -l /dev/mmcblk0

Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 3951 MB, 3951034368 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 480 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/mmcblk0p1 1 481 3858372 b Win95 FAT32
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
phys=(1023, 254, 63) logical=(480, 88, 63)
redpitaya>

The different physical/logical ending - what does this mean? I partitioned the SDHC 4GB card on Mac10.6.8 with one partition, FAT.
The log from RP is:

What is the best way to format the SD card that RedPitaya is happy with?

Thank you for your time,
Thorsten

Anybody with any help?
When I cant get any support from the board I cant recommend this beautiful thing though it would be a fantastic solution for many problems...

It looks like your SD card does not come up in time. If I had to guess, you are still using the 0.90 or early 0.92 builds, which had a problem in that area.

Get the latest ecosystem and unpack it to the SD's root directory.

I just had a look at the ecosystem zip from my link, it may be that that is not the fixed version - the timestamps are earlier than the commit that repaired the problem.

If it does not help you, and you do not have the means to build a replacement yourself, PM me. Or get the RedPitaya staff to send you a repaired package. You'll want a version that includes "pull request #11, Update rcS to catch SD mount failure".

OK, it's been a while since I had a good look at the wiki.

"Official" builds of all RedPitaya ecosystem- and application-versions can be found in the links given in the 5. Installing applications section.

Hi Thorsten,

sorry for not replying earlier. On my RP, it was a problem with the SD card itself. That one I've used at first was taken from a Beagle bone. On a beagle bone it works without any problem. However, it doesn't work properly with an RP.

I just bought an other SD card, did everything like it has been described and it works. However, for the price of the board, it should have contained a working SD card. Appart from that, RS is only interested in moving boxes. They didn't help anything to solve the problem. They just send you here and bla bla. They even admit to know nothing other then colour of the box.

And then you finally can start to work with it only to discover that the applications are fare from finished. Bazaar...

I like open source tools and I don't mind some trouble here and there. However, I don't feel like sharing improvements with others. Simply because RS is the sole distributor of this product and I don't feel like sponsoring RS. Perhaps they themselves can put some effort into it.

Best regards,

Hendrik

Hi Hendrik,

Fortunately, Thorsten's problem has already been solved two months ago by installing the latest ecosystem from the development archives.

As for the remainder of your post, I can somewhat understand your dissatisfaction with having a single large distributor in charge of most things Red Pitaya *.

What I don't agree with is your conclusion, by withholding improvements from the community, you hurt the existing users much more than you hurt the distributor.
Perhaps they themselves can put some effort into it.
Making improvements to the products they carry is not the job of a distributor, so what makes you think this ought to happen ?

Of course, in the end it's entirely your choice to contribute or not, although I would hope that you reconsider.

Greetings
Nils

* not this forum though, that is still firmly in the hands of the RP team (and to a lesser extent, mine).
